Player Identification in Gambling: What Is It and Why Is It Needed

Today responsible play is on trend in gambling. For this reason, industry representatives take different measures intended to fight against gambling addiction and to keep back under-age players from gambling. Customer identification is one of the most efficient tools that allow casinos and betting houses to follow the principles of responsible play.

What is player identification and why is it needed? What identification tools are the most common? Read in the article below.

What is player identification and why do gambling houses need it?

Customer identification is the procedure of personal identification by unique features that allow distinguishing a person from others. Identifiers include the first name and surname, date of birth, address of residence, passport data, mobile phone number, physical signs, etc.

Today companies from different fields do customer identification including gambling houses. This procedure is carried out by casinos and betting shops both online and land-based. Actions intended for personal identification are realized with the following goals.

  • Age confirmation. Different countries have different age restrictions for the attendance of gambling houses. In some jurisdictions, the minimal player age is 18 years old, in others 20 or 21 years. Operators can be prosecuted if they allow under-age players to gamble. Identification gives the possibility to get the personal data of every customer and consequently, to prevent under-age individuals from visiting gambling houses.

  • Transaction security. The operator is responsible for all financial operations conducted between the gambling house and its customers. To make sure that money is sent to an appropriate account, casinos verify whether real player data coincides with data stated upon the registration with the online platform.

  • Fighting against gambling addiction. Thanks to identification, casinos can detect players that were previously characterized as problem gamblers and asked to block their accounts or to exclude them from the customer list of the gambling house.

  • Fraud detection. The procedure of person identification allows owners of gambling businesses to recognize attendees that were previously caught acting illegally. Thanks to it, the personnel can timely define troublemakers and forbid them from entering the casino.

In most cases, a passport or other documents that confirm identity are used for player identification.

In many countries, where gambling is legal, the necessity for customer identification is stated at the legislative level. The conduct of the procedure is defined in corresponding normative legal documents.

Ways of player identification

Today gambling platforms identify customers in different ways. Let us review the most common ones.

Identification at the gambling venue

Identification at the gambling venue

Land-based gambling houses check documents of customers at the entrance. If the guest turns out to be under-age, he or she will have no access to the casino.

Besides, this method is practiced by betting shops that provide both online and offline services. To pass the identification procedure, the bettor has to register on the website first and then to come to the land-based betting shop or other organization that provides relevant services.

Example

In Russia, customers of licensed betting houses necessarily undergo identification. The procedure is carried out at land-based betting shops, as well as stores of such cell phone companies as Euroset, Svyaznoy, and Contact.

Identification using a video call

Online casinos and online betting shops use this way of customer identification. It is realized thanks to video communication with the customer using a PC, tablet, or smartphone connected to the Internet.

Example

In Belarus, online gambling platforms identify customers using a web-ID procedure: the user that intends to become a customer of the platform holds a document that confirms his or her identity in front of the web camera. This is required to verify the integrity of data provided by the user. Besides, this approach allows the organizer of the gambling activity to compare the user’s face with the photo on the document.

Identification using face recognition systems

Identification using face recognition systems

Face recognition technology is an efficient way of personal identification using facial features. Face recognition systems are powered by artificial intelligence and work as follows: the system gets the image of the human face and with the help of the algorithm, finds facial points that define individual characteristics. They can be the shape of eyes, chin, nose, mouth, as well as the distance between them. Afterwards, the program evaluates traits that do not depend on extraneous factors such as age, haircut, or makeup. Further, a digital pattern is compared with faces available in different databases.

Currently, customer identification using face recognition systems helps gambling houses to solve numerous tasks, for example, to define loyal customers, detect fraudsters and problem gamblers, monitor the age of visitors, etc.

Examples

In Spain, face recognition technology is used by the land-based casino Gran Madrid de Colón. The entrance to this casino is equipped with several cameras that record all visitors in real time. The program powered by artificial intelligence compares the obtained images with images of the database that contains information about loyal customers and players that officially asked to ban them from playing.

Mirage Resort casino located in Las Vegas uses a biometric face recognition system called Visual Casino. It helps to identify fraudsters and define VIP players among guests. Cameras collect and store digital images of all visitors. If the person visits the casino once more, the system will identify him or her just in several seconds thanks to the photo present in the database.

In 2019, it has been reported that face recognition systems are tested at several casinos located in Macao, China. Those programs are designed to assist in the detection of under-age visitors, unfair players, dishonest employees, as well as people whose presence in the gambling parlor may be unwelcome.

More information about player identification at land-based and online casinos will be provided at Kyiv iGaming Affiliate Conference, which will take place in Kyiv on December 18.
